Deuterated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the Interstellar Medium: The Aliphatic C–D Band Strengths

Abstract Deuterium (D) was exclusively generated in the Big Bang, and the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) model predicts a primordial abundance of D/H ≈ 26 parts per million (ppm). As the Galaxy evolves, D/H gradually decreases because of astration. The Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) model predicts a present-day abundance of D/H ≳ 20 ppm. However, observations of the local interstellar medium have revealed that the gas-phase interstellar D/H varies considerably from one region to another and has a median abundance of D/H ≈ 13 ppm, substantially lower than predicted from the BBN and GCE models. It has been suggested that the missing D atoms of D/H ≈ 7 ppm could have been locked up in deuterated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules. However, we have previously demonstrated that PAHs with aromatic C–D units are insufficient to account for the missing D. Here we explore if PAHs with aliphatic C–D units could be a reservoir of D. We perform quantum chemical computations of the vibrational spectra of superdeuterated PAHs (in which one D and one H share one C atom) and PAHs to which a D-substituted methyl group is attached, and derive the band strengths of the aliphatic C–D stretch (A 4.65). By applying the computationally derived A 4.65 to the observed aliphatic C–D emission at ∼4.6–4.8 μm, we find that PAHs with aliphatic C–D units could have tied up a substantial amount of D/H and marginally account for the missing D. The possible routes for generating PAHs with aliphatic C–D units are also discussed.

The Neutron Mean Life and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

We explore the effect of neutron lifetime and its uncertainty on standard big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). BBN describes the cosmic production of the light nuclides, 1H, D, 3H+3He, 4He, and 7Li+7Be, in the first minutes of cosmic time. The neutron mean life τn has two roles in modern BBN calculations: (1) it normalizes the matrix element for weak n↔p interconversions, and (2) it sets the rate of free neutron decay after the weak interactions freeze-out. We review the history of the interplay between τn measurements and BBN, and present a study of the sensitivity of the light element abundances to the modern neutron lifetime measurements. We find that τn uncertainties dominate the predicted 4He error budget, but these theory errors remain smaller than the uncertainties in 4He observations, even with the dispersion in recent neutron lifetime measurements. For the other light element predictions, τn contributes negligibly to their error budget. Turning the problem around, we combine present BBN and cosmic microwave background (CMB) determinations of the cosmic baryon density to predict a “cosmologically preferred” mean life of τn(BBN+CMB)=870±16s, which is consistent with experimental mean life determinations. We show that if future astronomical and cosmological helium observations can reach an uncertainty of σobs(Yp)=0.001 in the 4He mass fraction Yp, this could begin to discriminate between the mean life determinations.

Primordial lepton asymmetries in the precision cosmology era: Current status and future sensitivities from BBN and the CMB

Using a new sample of extremely metal poor systems, the EMPRESS survey has recently reported a primordial helium abundance that is $3\sigma$ smaller than the prediction from the standard big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) scenario. This measurement could be interpreted as a hint for a primordial lepton asymmetry in the electron neutrino flavor. Motivated by the EMPRESS results, we present a comprehensive analysis of the lepton asymmetry using measurements of the abundances of primordial elements, along with cosmic microwave background (CMB) data from Planck. Assuming that there is no dark radiation in our Universe, we find an electron neutrino chemical potential $\xi_{\nu_e} = 0.043 \pm 0.015$, which deviates from zero by $2.9\sigma$. If no assumption is made on the abundance of dark radiation in the Universe, the chemical potential is $\xi_{\nu_e} = 0.046 \pm 0.021$, which deviates from zero by $2.2\sigma$. We also find that this result is rather insensitive to the choice of nuclear reaction rates. If the true helium abundance corresponds to the EMPRESS central value, future CMB observations from the Simons Observatory and CMB-S4 will increase the significance for a nonzero lepton asymmetry to $4\sigma$ and $5\sigma$ respectively, assuming no dark radiation, or to $3\sigma$ when no assumption is made on the abundance of dark radiation.

Implications of the non-observation of 6Li in halo stars for the primordial 7Li problem

The primordial Lithium Problem is intimately connected to the assumption that the 7Li abundance observed in metal-poor halo stars is unchanged from its primordial value, which lies significantly below the predictions of standard big-bang nucleosynthesis. Two key lines of evidence have argued that these stars have not significantly depleted their initial (mostly primordial) 7Li: i) the lack of dispersion in Li abundance measurements at low metallicity (and high surface temperature); and ii) the detection of the more fragile 6Li isotope in at least two halo stars. The purported 6Li detections were in good agreement with predictions from cosmic-ray nucleosynthesis which is responsible for the origin of 6Li. This concordance left little room for 6Li depletion, and the apparent 6Li survival implied that 7Li largely evaded destruction, because stellar interiors destroy 6Li more vigorously then than 7Li. Recent (re)-observations of halo stars challenge the evidence against 7Li depletion: i) lithium elemental abundances now show significant dispersion, and ii) sensitive 6Li searches now reveal only upper limits to the  6Li/7Li ratio. We discuss the consequences of these 6Li non-detections on the primordial 7Li Problem, Galactic cosmic-ray nucleosynthesis, and the question of differential depletion of Li in stars. The tight new 6Li upper limits generally fall far below the predictions of cosmic-ray nucleosynthesis, implying that substantial 6Li depletion has occurred — by factors up to 50. We show that in stars with 6Li limits and thus lower bounds on 6Li depletion, an equal amount of  7Li depletion is more than sufficient to resolve the primordial 7Li Problem. This picture is consistent with well-studied stellar models in which 7Li is less depleted than 6Li, and strengthen the case that the Lithium Problem has an astrophysical solution. We conclude by suggesting future observations that could test these ideas.

Radiative plateau inflation with conformal invariance: Dynamical generation of electroweak and seesaw scales

We investigate a scale-invariant $B-L$ scenario where the Standard Model (SM) is supplemented with a dark scalar $\phi$ which has gauge \& Yukawa interactions, with the couplings $g_{BL}$ and $y$, respectively, leading to radiative plateau inflation at scale $\phi=M$ in the ultraviolet (UV), while dynamically generating the Electroweak and Seesaw scales \textit{\'a l\'a} Coleman-Weinberg in the infrared (IR). This is particularly achieved by implementing threshold corrections at an energy scale $\mu_T$ arising due to the presence of vector-like fermions. We show that implementing the inflationary observables makes the couplings solely dependent on the plateau scale $M$, leaving us with only two independent parameters $M$ and $\mu_T$. Within the theoretically consistent parameter space defined by $m_{Z_{BL}} > 850~\rm GeV$, from the assumption of independent evolution of the dark sector couplings from the SM couplings and $M < 5.67~M_P$ required for the realisation of inflationary \textit{plateau-like} behaviour of the potential around $\phi=M$, where $M_P=2.4\times10^{18}$ GeV is the reduced Planck mass, we identify the parameter space that is excluded by the current LHC results from the search for the heavy $Z_{BL}$ boson. For typical benchmark points in the viable parameter regions, we estimate the reheating temperature to be $\mathcal{O}(TeV)$ thus consistent with the standard Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) constraints. For typical benchmark points ($M=5.67,~1,~0.1~M_P$) we predict the scales of inflation to be $\mathcal{H}_{inf}=2.79\times10^{12}$ GeV, $1.53\times10^{10}$ GeV and $1.53\times10^7$ GeV, respectively.

Resonance Excitations in ^{7}Be(d,p)^{8}Be^{*} to Address the Cosmological Lithium Problem.

The anomaly in lithium abundance is a well-known unresolved problem in nuclear astrophysics. A recent revisit to the problem tried the avenue of resonance enhancement to account for the primordial ^{7}Li abundance in standard big-bang nucleosynthesis. Prior measurements of the ^{7}Be(d,p)^{8}Be^{*} reaction could not account for the individual contributions of the different excited states involved, particularly at higher energies close to the Q value of the reaction. We carried out an experiment at HIE-ISOLDE, CERN to study this reaction at E_{c.m.}=7.8  MeV, populating excitations up to 22MeV in ^{8}Be for the first time. The angular distributions of the several excited states have been measured and the contributions of the higher excited states in the total cross section at the relevant big-bang energies were obtained by extrapolation to the Gamow window using the talys code. The results show that by including the contribution of the 16.63MeV state, the maximum value of the total S factor inside the Gamow window comes out to be 167MeV b as compared to earlier estimate of 100MeV b. However, this still does not account for the lithium discrepancy.

Discovery of a thin lithium plateau among metal-poor red giant branch stars

The surface lithium abundance, A(Li), of warm metal-poor dwarf stars exhibits a narrow plateau down to [Fe/H] ~ −2.8 dex, while at lower metallicities the average value drops by 0.3 dex with a significant star-by-star scatter (called ‘lithium meltdown’). This behaviour is in conflict with predictions of standard stellar evolution models calculated with the initial A(Li) provided by the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis. The lower red giant branch (LRGB) stars provide a complementary tool to understand the initial A(Li) distribution in metal-poor stars. We have collected a sample of high-resolution spectra of 58 LRGB stars spanning a range of [Fe/H] between ~−7.0 dex and ~−1.3 dex. The LRGB stars display an A(Li) distribution that is clearly different from that of the dwarfs, without signatures of a meltdown and with two distinct components: (a) a thin A(Li) plateau with an average A(Li) = 1.09 ± 0.01 dex (σ= 0.07 dex) and (b) a small fraction of Li-poor stars with A(Li) lower than ~0.7 dex. The A(Li) distribution observed in LRGB stars can be reconciled with an initial abundance close to the cosmological value by including an additional chemical element transport in stellar evolution models. The required efficiency of this transport allows us to also match the Spite plateau lithium abundance measured in the dwarfs. The emerging scenario is that all metal-poor stars formed with the same initial A(Li), but those that are likely the product of coalescence or that experienced binary mass transfer show lower A(Li). We conclude that the A(Li) in LRGB stars is qualitatively compatible with the cosmological A(Li) value and that the meltdown observed in dwarf stars does not reflect a real drop in the abundance at birth.

Model independent approach to photodisintegration of 7 Li at the range of energies of interest to BBN

One of the elements that was synthesized primordially in the standard Big Bang Nucleosynthesis is lithium. Lithium, being fragile gets easily destroyed at relatively low temperatures in the mixing process between stellar surface and hot internal layers. So that, at the end of the stellar lifetime the lithium content is believed to be depleted. Series of experimental measurements on lithium isotopes were carried out at High Intensity Gamma Ray Source (HIGS) at Duke Free Electron Laser Laboratory. More recently experiments [1]-[2] were performed, to measure the differential cross section of the photo-neutron reaction channel in photodisintegration of 7 Li, where the progeny nuclei is in the ground state as well as in excited states. The purpose of present contribution is to study the reaction channel 7 Li + γ → 6 Li + n using linearly polarized photons. The model independent irreducible tensor formalism [3]-[5] will be used to study the differential cross section of the reaction. We study the angular dependence of differential cross section by expressing differential cross section in terms of legendre polynomials. In view of the several theoretical and ongoing experimental studies, a detailed theoretical study of the spin structure of the amplitudes in 7 Li + γ → 6 Li + n and their expansion in terms of ’electric’ and ‘magnetic’ amplitudes is needed to analyze the measurements of spin observables as well as differential cross section, which leads to a better understanding of the problem at astrophysical energies

Non-detection of 6Li in Spite plateau stars with ESPRESSO

ABSTRACT The detection of 6Li in Spite plateau stars contradicts the standard big bang nucleosynthesis prediction, known as the second cosmological lithium problem. We measure the isotopic ratio 6Li/7Li in three Spite plateau stars: HD 84937, HD 140283, and LP 815−43. We use 3D non-local thermodynamic equilibrium radiative transfer and for the first time apply this to high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio data from the ultra-stable ESPRESSO/Very Large Telescope spectrograph. These are among the best spectra ever taken of any metal-poor stars. As the measurement of 6Li/7Li is degenerate with other physical stellar parameters, we employ Markov chain Monte Carlo methods to find the probability distributions of measured parameters. As a test of systematics, we also use three different fitting methods. We do not detect 6Li in any of the three stars, and find consistent results between our different methods. We estimate 2σ upper limits to 6Li/7Li of 0.7, 0.6, and 1.7 per cent, respectively, for HD 84937, HD 140283, and LP 815−43. Our results indicate that there is no second cosmological lithium problem, as there is no evidence of 6Li in Spite plateau stars.

Big Bang nucleosynthesis in a weakly non-ideal plasma

We propose a correction of the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) scenario to resolve the primordial lithium problem by considering a possibility that the primordial plasma can deviate from the ideal state. In the standard BBN, the primordial plasma is assumed to be ideal, with particles and photons satisfying the Maxwell-Boltzmann and Planck distribution, respectively. We suggest that this assumption of the primordial plasma being ideal might oversimplify the early Universe and cause the lithium problem. We find that a deviation of photon distribution from the Planck distribution, which is parameterised with the help of Tsallis statistics, can resolve the primordial lithium problem when the particle distributions of the primordial plasma still follow the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. We discuss how the primordial plasma can be weakly non-ideal in this specific fashion and its effects on the cosmic evolution.

Chemical abundances in seven metal-poor H ii regions and a determination of the primordial helium abundance

ABSTRACT We conducted a long-slit spectrophotometry analysis to obtain the chemical abundances of seven metal-poor H ii regions in three galaxies: UM 160, UM 420, and TOL 0513−393. The data have been taken with the Focal Reducer Low Dispersion Spectrograph 1 (FORS1) at the 8.2-m Very Large Telescope. We derived the physical conditions and the chemical abundances of N, O, Ne, S, Ar, and Cl. We also performed a detailed analysis that involves abundance determinations using the t2 formalism. Based on He i recombination line intensity ratios, together with the {\sc HELIO 14} code, we derived the abundance of He. In addition, for a value $\Delta Y/\Delta Z_O \rm =3.3\pm 0.7$, we have estimated that the primordial helium abundance by mass is YP = 0.2448 ± 0.0033. This value agrees with values derived from Standard Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and with other recent determinations of YP.

The evolution of Lithium: implications of a universal Spite plateau

ABSTRACT The cosmological 7Li problem consists in explaining why the primordial Li abundance, as predicted by the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis theory with constraints from WMAP and Planck, is a factor of 3 larger than the Li abundance measured in the stars of the Spite plateau defined by old, warm dwarf stars of the Milky Way halo. Several explanations have been proposed to explain this difference, including various Li depletion processes as well as non-standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis, but the main question remains unanswered. In this paper, we present detailed chemical evolution models for dwarf spheroidal and ultra faint galaxies, compute the galactic evolution of 7Li abundance in these objects, and compare it with observations of similar objects. In our models, Li is mainly produced by novae and cosmic rays, and to a minor extent, by low and intermediate mass stars. We adopt the yield combination that best fits the Li abundances in the Milky Way stars. It is evident that the observations of dwarf objects define a Spite plateau, identical to that observed in the Milky Way, thus suggesting that the Spite plateau could be a universal feature and its meaning should be discussed. The predictions of our models for dwarf galaxies are obtained by assuming as Li primordial abundance either the one detected in the atmospheres of the oldest halo stars (Spite plateau; A(Li) ∼ 2.2 dex), or the one from cosmological observations (WMAP; A(Li) ∼ 2.66 dex). Finally, we discuss the implications of the universality of the Spite plateau results.

Study of the contribution of the 7Be(d, p) reaction to the 7Li problem in the Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis

Our research goal is to measure the cross section of the 7Be(d, p) reaction to find a solution for the cosmological the 7Li problem, which is an overestimation of the primordial 7Li abundance in the standard Big-Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) model. We developed a method to produce an unstable 7Be target to measure the reaction in normal kinematics in a high-resolution measurement. We performed an experiment to produce the 7Be target and also to measure the cross section of the 7Be(d, p)8Be reaction with the produced 7Be target at the tandem facility, Kobe University. A 2.36 MeV proton beam irradiated a Li target to transmute 7Li particles to 7Be particles via the 7Li(p, n)7Be reaction. We produced 2.6×1013 7Be particles in the target after two days’ proton irradiation. After the target production, the beam ion was changed to deuterons with energies of 0.6, 1.0, and 1.6 MeV to measure the 7Be(d, p) reaction. The outgoing protons were measured by two ΔE-E silicon telescopes placed at 30° and 45°. We report the preliminary results of this experiment, including the 7Be(d, p) cross section.

Asteroseismic modelling of solar-type stars: a deeper look at the treatment of initial helium abundance

ABSTRACT Detailed understanding of stellar physics is essential towards a robust determination of stellar properties (e.g. radius, mass, and age). Among the vital input physics used in the modelling of solar-type stars which remain poorly constrained, is the initial helium abundance. To this end, when constructing stellar model grids, the initial helium abundance is estimated either (i) by using the semi-empirical helium-to-heavy element enrichment ratio, (ΔY/ΔZ), anchored to the standard big bang nucleosynthesis value, or (ii) by setting the initial helium abundance as a free variable. Adopting 35 low-mass, solar-type stars with multiyear Kepler photometry from the asteroseismic ‘LEGACY’ sample, we explore the systematic uncertainties on the inferred stellar parameters (i.e. radius, mass, and age) arising from the treatment of the initial helium abundance in stellar model grids. The stellar masses and radii derived from grids with free initial helium abundance are lower compared to those from grids based on a fixed ΔY/ΔZ ratio. We find the systematic uncertainties on mean density, radius, mass, and age arising from grids which employ a fixed value of ΔY/ΔZ and those with free initial helium abundance to be ∼ 0.9 per cent, ∼ 2 per cent, ∼ 5 per cent, and ∼ 29 per cent, respectively. We report that the systematic uncertainties on the inferred masses and radii arising from the treatment of initial helium abundance in stellar grids lie within the expected accuracy limits of ESA’s PLATO, although this is not the case for the age.

Thermonuclear Reaction Rates and Primordial Nucleosynthesis

Abstract Assuming the best numerical value for the cosmic baryonic density and the existence of three neutrino flavors, standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis is a parameter-free model. It is important to assess if the observed primordial abundances can be reproduced by simulations. Numerous studies have shown that the simulations overpredict the primordial 7Li abundance by a factor of compared to the observations. The discrepancy may be caused by unknown systematics in 7Li observations, poorly understood depletion of lithium in stars, errors in thermonuclear rates that take part in the lithium and beryllium synthesis, or physics beyond the standard model. Here, we focus on the likelihood of a nuclear physics solution. The status of the key nuclear reaction rates is summarized. Big Bang nucleosynthesis simulations are performed with the most recent reaction rates, and the uncertainties of the predicted abundances are established using a Monte Carlo technique. Correlations between abundances and reaction rates are investigated based on the metric of mutual information. The rates of four reactions impact the primordial 7Li abundance: 3He(α,γ)7Be, d(p,γ)3He, 7Be(d,p)2α, and 7Be(n,p)7Li. We employ a genetic algorithm to search for simultaneous rate changes in these four reactions that may account for all observed primordial abundances. When the search is performed for reaction rate ranges that are much wider than recently reported uncertainties, no acceptable solutions are found. Based on the currently available evidence, we conclude that it is highly unlikely for the cosmological lithium problem to have a nuclear physics solution.

Cosmological lithium problem

<p indent=0mm>Firstly proposed in 1946 by George Gamow, the hot big bang theory is now the most widely accepted cosmological model of the Universe, where the Universe expanded from a very high-density state dominated by radiation. The theory has been vindicated by the observation of the cosmic microwave background, our emerging knowledge of the large-scale structure of the Universe, and the rough consistency between calculations and observations of primordial abundances of the lightest elements in nature: Hydrogen, helium, and lithium. Primordial big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) began when the Universe was <sc>3 minutes</sc> old and ended less than half an hour later when nuclear reactions were quenched by the low temperature (about <sc>10⁹ K,</sc> i.e., ~1 GK, or <italic>kT</italic><sc>~100 keV)</sc> and density conditions in the expanding Universe. Only the lightest nuclides (²H, ³He, ⁴He, and ⁷Li) were synthesized in appreciable quantities through BBN, and these relics provide us a unique window on the early Universe. Constrained by the baryon density determined by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and PLANCK satellites, the primordial abundances of ²H (referred to as D hereafter) and ⁴He inferred from observational data are in good general agreement with predictions; however, the standard BBN theory overestimates the primordial ⁷Li abundance by about a factor of three to four. This significant deviation is the so-called “cosmological lithium problem.” Over about two decades, many attempts to resolve this discrepancy using conventional nuclear physics have been unsuccessful yet. The possible solutions to this unresolved problem have been suggested, which can be mainly categorized into three groups, according to which part of the preceding analysis is called into question: (1) Astrophysical solutions revise the measured primordial lithium abundance; (2) solutions beyond the standard model invoke new particle physics or nonstandard cosmological physics; (3) nuclear physics solutions alter the reaction flow into and out of mass-7. This paper systematically reviews three major aspects of this long-pending cosmological lithium problem. It includes the scientific background, motivation, possible solutions and attempts made in the past. Here, we mainly focus on the nuclear physics solutions, which might solve this problem in an elegant way. In this review, the goals of different research directions are summarized and evaluated, and the promising direction is guided for future investigations.

Planck2018 results

We present cosmological parameter results from the final full-missionPlanckmeasurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies, combining information from the temperature and polarization maps and the lensing reconstruction. Compared to the 2015 results, improved measurements of large-scale polarization allow the reionization optical depth to be measured with higher precision, leading to significant gains in the precision of other correlated parameters. Improved modelling of the small-scale polarization leads to more robust constraints on many parameters, with residual modelling uncertainties estimated to affect them only at the 0.5σlevel. We find good consistency with the standard spatially-flat 6-parameter ΛCDM cosmology having a power-law spectrum of adiabatic scalar perturbations (denoted “base ΛCDM” in this paper), from polarization, temperature, and lensing, separately and in combination. A combined analysis gives dark matter density Ωch2 = 0.120 ± 0.001, baryon density Ωbh2 = 0.0224 ± 0.0001, scalar spectral indexns = 0.965 ± 0.004, and optical depthτ = 0.054 ± 0.007 (in this abstract we quote 68% confidence regions on measured parameters and 95% on upper limits). The angular acoustic scale is measured to 0.03% precision, with 100θ* = 1.0411 ± 0.0003. These results are only weakly dependent on the cosmological model and remain stable, with somewhat increased errors, in many commonly considered extensions. Assuming the base-ΛCDM cosmology, the inferred (model-dependent) late-Universe parameters are: Hubble constantH0 = (67.4 ± 0.5)  km s−1 Mpc−1; matter density parameter Ωm = 0.315 ± 0.007; and matter fluctuation amplitudeσ8 = 0.811 ± 0.006. We find no compelling evidence for extensions to the base-ΛCDM model. Combining with baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements (and considering single-parameter extensions) we constrain the effective extra relativistic degrees of freedom to beNeff = 2.99 ± 0.17, in agreement with the Standard Model predictionNeff = 3.046, and find that the neutrino mass is tightly constrained to ∑mν &lt;  0.12  eV. The CMB spectra continue to prefer higher lensing amplitudes than predicted in base ΛCDM at over 2σ, which pulls some parameters that affect the lensing amplitude away from the ΛCDM model; however, this is not supported by the lensing reconstruction or (in models that also change the background geometry) BAO data. The joint constraint with BAO measurements on spatial curvature is consistent with a flat universe, ΩK = 0.001 ± 0.002. Also combining with Type Ia supernovae (SNe), the dark-energy equation of state parameter is measured to bew0 = −1.03 ± 0.03, consistent with a cosmological constant. We find no evidence for deviations from a purely power-law primordial spectrum, and combining with data from BAO, BICEP2, and Keck Array data, we place a limit on the tensor-to-scalar ratior0.002 &lt;  0.06. Standard big-bang nucleosynthesis predictions for the helium and deuterium abundances for the base-ΛCDM cosmology are in excellent agreement with observations. ThePlanckbase-ΛCDM results are in good agreement with BAO, SNe, and some galaxy lensing observations, but in slight tension with the Dark Energy Survey’s combined-probe results including galaxy clustering (which prefers lower fluctuation amplitudes or matter density parameters), and in significant, 3.6σ, tension with local measurements of the Hubble constant (which prefer a higher value). Simple model extensions that can partially resolve these tensions are not favoured by thePlanckdata.

Analysis of the multicomponent relativistic Boltzmann equation for electron scattering in big bang nucleosynthesis

Big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) is valuable as a means to constrain the physics of the early universe and it is the only probe of the radiation-dominated epoch. A fundamental assumption in BBN is that the nuclear velocity distributions obey Maxwell-Boltzmann (MB) statistics as they do in stars. Specifically, the BBN epoch is characterized by a dilute baryon plasma for which the velocity distribution of nuclei is mainly determined by the dominant Coulomb elastic scattering with mildly relativistic electrons. One must therefore deduce the momentum distribution for reacting nuclei from the multicomponent relativistic Boltzmann equation. However, the full multicomponent relativistic Boltzmann equation has only recently been analyzed and its solution has only been worked out in special cases. Moreover, a variety of schemes have been proposed that introduce nonthermal components into the BBN environment which can alter the thermal distribution of reacting nuclei. Here, we construct the relativistic Boltzmann equation in the context of BBN. We also derive a Langevin model and perform relativistic Monte-Carlo simulations which clarify the baryon distribution during BBN and can be used to analyze any relaxation from a nonthermal injection. We show by these analyses that the thermalization process leads to a nuclear distribution function that remains very close to MB statistics even during the most relativistic environment relevant to BBN. Hence, the predictions of standard BBN remain unchanged.

Dark energy from Higgs potential

We derive the ratio of dark energy to baryon matter content in the universe from a Higgs potential matching a description of baryon matter on an intrinsic configuration space. The match determines the Higgs mass and self-coupling parameters and introduces a constant term in the Higgs potential. The constant term is taken to give dark energy contributions from detained neutrons, both primordial and piled-up neutrons from nuclear processes in stars. This corresponds to the dark energy content increasing with time. The two contributions possibly give rise to the primordial inflation and the later accelerated recession, respectively. The ensuing inflation during nucleosynthesis may explain the primordial lithium-seven deficit relative to the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis model predictions. From the observed helium and stellar metallicity contents, we get a dark energy to baryon matter ratio of 14.5(0.7) to compare with the observed value of 13.9(0.2).

A critical analysis of the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

Standard Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (SBBN) represents one of the basic tools to understand the early evolution of the universe. In this paper, we reanalyze this process to focus on the so-called lithium problem. 7Li is overproduced during SBBN compared to its primordial abundance as obtained from observations. For this reason, we extend the scenarios of SBBN in two directions: (i) equating all neutrino chemical potentials and including more neutrino families, (ii) varying neutrino chemical potentials independently. Since the so-called cosmological lithium problem is not resolved on nuclear/astrophysical ground, we argue that this problem should be examined by invoking nonstandard assumptions.
